Earth Invades – Now on macOs and Windows
The Shooter 'Earth invades' is now available in downloadable versions for macOS and Windows. This keeps the game playable, even after Adobe has stopped distributing the Flash Player plugin.
The end of Flash should not come as a great surprise to anyone. Most major browser vendors disabled it years ago, and with the advent of HTML5 there is now an open standard that outperforms almost every aspect of it. It's true that Flash had a lot of problems, but it also enabled a lot of experiences roughly a decade before those open standards. It allowed for early experimentation. Sites like Newgrounds, Kongregate and Armodred games gave us tons of (often quite strange) games long before the advent of Itch (and the "game engine boom"). For better or worse the (indie-)games of today would not be the same without Flash.
From a more personal perspective Flash enabled me to finish this game, my first larger completed game project (which started out in Java). Short after that those flash-skills landed me a new job (with the best office layout I've worked in so far).
With all that:
So long Flash, and thanks for all the swf.
Ps. If you, like me, care for the preservation of the Flash era of web games, then you should should take a moment and check out Ruffle. Ruffle is an swf-runner written in Rust intended for embeding on the web using the magic of WebAssembly. It's still in early development, but once matured it should be able to bring most, if not all, those old games back to the web where they belong.
